I'm sure people will think I'm a little nutty, but I had serious motivation for this room. At first, my 3-year-old daughter would wake up on occasion and get into our bed. I let this happen mostly due to exhaustion and the fact that it wasn't worth the battle in the middle of the night. Somehow over several months, this became a nightly routine and finally, it occurred to me what a bad habit I had created. At around four months pregnant I started realizing how big problem this was going to be once baby number two arrives. So I finally committed to not only completing this new bedroom but making it insanely awesome! It needed to be every little girl's dream so that there's no way she would ever want to leave!
Next up, painting all the wood trim.
I went with a neutral color called toasted gray because I want the room to be one my daughter can grow into.
Okay, now for the fun part. Painting an actual mountain as a feature wall. I drew a rough outline with a pencil using actual mountain photos to give me ideas of where to add peaks and valleys at different levels. I chose 4 different colors, moving from dark at the bottom to light toward the top, then finished it off with flat white the same shade as the woodwork for a snow-capped mountain.
I started painting from the bottom up and then realized top down was the way to go! After two coats of one color, layering the darker color on top made the most sense.
